Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid injections have been shown to reduce pain and improve function in joints such as the knee with mild to moderate osteoarthritis with the effects lasting from 12 to 24 months.  We have found they are often recommended to patients as a safe and effective way of managing osteoarthritis (but are rarely available on the NHS).
This is a healthy and sustainable way for active people to manage the effects of wear and tear in their joints which allows them to continue to exercise.  The treatment has been around for nearly 20 years but in the past the price of the hyaluronic acid was much higher and unaffordable for many.  In recent years the costs have dropped and now is becoming increasingly popular in mainstream use and as a safer and longer acting alternative to steroid.  It also has the added benefit of being nourishing for the joint, so aiding preservation of the joint surfaces and thus longevity of the joint.
Studies confirm hyaluronic acid injections:
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve lubrication
  • Improve shock absorption
  • Improve nutrition to joint surfaces
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance and therefore is an extremely safe form of treatment.
I have been using this substance for many years in clinical practice and am happy to discuss if this treatment is appropriate for your condition.  Hyaluronic acid is not suitable for injection into the joints of the spine or pelvis.
